Behind the waterfall

Updated: Jan 29

The Cascada de Misol-Ha is a beautiful waterfall located in southern Mexico, in the depths of the Chiapas jungle, 20 kilometers from the city of Palenque.

The possibility of walking behind the noisy 35 meters high wall of water is a unique experience that not so many waterfalls can offer, and makes this place an incredible memory to bring home.

The water plunges into a large, blue, almost circular pool amidst tropical vegetation.

The path leading to the cave behind the waterfall is carved between big stone rocks, vegetation and small waterways and waterfalls, and humidity reigns supreme.

As a consequence, it's very challenging for relaxed tourists like me to walk around with beach slippers without slipping on the floor every two steps.

It's easier to just stand still, don't move and observe what's around you.

Depending on your point of view, the water of the pool at the bottom of the waterfall may appear as blue or sea green. No matter what colour you see, the pool is inviting you to take a bath. The green vegetation all around the cave is warmly welcoming you to explore this secret place even further.

At the same time, you can feel the oppressing humidity in your arms, but above all you get a sense of the overwhelming power of nature in your head and in your chest, as the roaring waterfall doesn't stop reminding you how small and fragile we all are.

In the blink of an eye this very challenging puzzle was born in my mind.

I really wanted to translate those contrasting feelings into a picture, in an effort to try and bring those feelings home somehow. It was like at a certain moment each of the different colours around me represented a different feeling, and taking this picture became an instinctive reaction of my body.

I am just a puzzle lover, but I think I really understand why local communities are doing their best to preserve this place and its flora and fauna.
